Sridevi born as Shree Amma Yanger (13 August 1963)[1] is an Indian actress who has worked in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and a few Kannada films. Starting to act at the age of four, she made her debut as an adult in the late 1970s. After going on to establish herself as one of the leading actresses of the 1980s and early 1990s,[2][3] she left the industry in 1997 to raise her children.[1] During her career, she has won four Filmfare Awards—two for Hindi films, and one each for Tamil and Telugu films. Sridevi is often cited by film media as one of the best actresses of Hindi Cinema.[4]
Sridevi was born as Shree Amma Yanger to Ayyapan and Rajeswari on 13 August 1963 in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. Her father was a lawyer. She has a sister and two step brothers. Sridevi married Boney Kapoor, a film producer and the elder brother of actors Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor, in 1996. They have two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi (Krishna). Her mother tongue is Tamil.[5]
[edit]Career in South
Sridevi started her career as a child actor in the 1967 Tamil movie Kandan Karunai playing the role of young Muruga,[6] and acted in many Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies from then on. During her early teens, she acted in a number of Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada movies as a lead actress.
In 1976, Sridevi got her first big break as heroine in K. Balachander's Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite rising stars, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.[7] She then followed with a succession of films with both Haasan and Rajnikanth. With the former, she was in movies such as Guru, Sankarlal, Sigappu Rojakkal, Thaayillamal Naan Illai, Meendum Kokila, Vazhvey Maayam, Varumayin Niram Sivappu, Neela Malargal, Moondram Pirai and 16 Vayathinile and with Rajnikanth, she appeared in movies such as Gayathri, Dharma Yuddham, Priya, Johnny, Ranuva Veeran, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Adutha Varisu and Naan Adimai Illai.
At the same time, Sridevi started acting in Telugu movies, a number of which were made by K. Raghavendra Rao. With N. T. Rama Rao, she acted in movies such as Konda Veeti Simham, Vetagadu, Sardar Paparayudu and Bobbili Puli. With A. Nageswara Rao, she appeared in movies such as Mudulla Koduku, Premabhishekham, Bangaru Kanku and Premakanuka. With Krishna, she acted in movies such as Kanchu Kagada, Kalavari Samsaram, Krishnavatharam, Burripalem Bolludu, and Khaidi Rudrayya. She acted in more than 30 films with Telugu actor Krishna (Father of South Indian Actor Mahesh Babu)
[edit]Career in Hindi films
Towards the tail end of her Telugu film career, Sridevi started venturing into Hindi movies. Her first film as a heroine titled Solva Saawan released in 1978, flopped at the box office. Before Bollywood could write her off, her second film Himmatwala in 1983 opposite Jeetendra went on to be a blockbuster hit and skyrocketed Sridevi to overnight stardom. The chartbuster number 'Nainon me Sapna' picturised around thousands of pots set the trend for more Southern masala potboilers in Bollywood. Jeetendra and Sridevi became a hit pair and went on to star in many more successful films like Tohfa, Mawaali and Justice Chaudhry. While Sridevi was fast becoming the new poster girl of the masses, she also wowed the critics with her performance as a child-woman suffering from amnesia in the highly acclaimed Sadma remade from the Tamil hit Moondram Pirai opposite Kamal Haasan. Her histrionics in the film won her the first Filmfare nomination for Best Actress but she lost out to Shabana Azmi for Arth.
Sridevi's success story continued with hits like Subhash Ghai directed Karma and K. Bhagyaraj's Aakhree Raasta, both released in 1986. The success of the snake fantasy film Nagina in 1986 established Sridevi's reputation as a leading star. The film's snake dance in the climax also showcased her dancing skills under the guidance of choreographer Saroj Khan who went on to deliver many more hit dance numbers with the actress. The next year Sridevi starred in the all-time blockbuster Mr. India with Anil Kapoor. The dance number 'Hawa Hawai' gave her an eponymous nickname.
In 1989 she portrayed twin sisters in ChaalBaaz and won her the first Hindi Filmfare Best Actress Award. The same year her she also played the title role in Yash Chopra's Chandni.
Yash Chopra again cast her in his inter-generational romance Lamhe released in 1991. Despite failing at the box office, the film went on to become a modern cult classic and one of the biggest hits in the overseas territory. While the film won the Filmfare Best Film Award, Sridevi's intense performance as mother and daughter won her the second Filmfare Best Actress Award and much international acclaim.
In 1992, she starred opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Khuda Gawah, where she had another double role as a pining Afghan wife and her spirited daughter which won her another Filmfare nomination. The Telugu film Kshana Kshanam directed by Ram Gopal Verma was released in the same year and brought her her fourth Filmfare Award and a Nandi Award for Best Actress. The failure of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993) was a big setback to her career, but she continued to deliver fine performances. She starred as the innocent victim trapped for drug smuggling in Mahesh Bhatt's thriller Gumrah (1993 and played a rich businesswoman with grey shades in Laadla (1994). In Judaai released in 1997, Sridevi played the role of a greedy housewife who sells her husband to another woman for a rich life. Her trademark performance won her her eighth Filmfare nomination after which she took a break to settle in matrimony.
[edit]Since retiring
After a six-year hiatus, Sridevi briefly returned to the small screen in the Sahara sitcom Malini Iyer (2004–2005). She also appeared on Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai (2004) for Karisma Kapoor and as a judge in the TV show Kaboom (2005). She performed a medley of some of her musical numbers at the 52nd Filmfare Awards 2007. She is a member of the Board of Directors at the Asian Academy of Film & Television.[8]
On September 19, 2009, Sridevi appeared on the Sony TV show 10 Ka Dum hosted by Salman Khan. On the episode, she and her husband, Boney Kapoor, were guests, along with actor-director Prabhudeva, actress Ayesha Takia and the musical duo Sajid-Wajid, all of whom had come to promote their film Wanted.
Sridevi has also appeared on ramps in Lakme Fashion Weeks 2008 and 2010 and the HDIL Couture Week 2009 as Showstopper for prestigious designers like Neeta Lulla, Queenie Dhody and Priya-Chintan.
Sridevi also developed passion for painting which has since brought her foreign attention. In March 2010, her paintings have been chosen by a reputed international art auction house. The auction was set to start in April 2010, and all the money raised has been donated.[9]
[edit]Comeback
Sridevi announced her comeback in early 2011. She is currently working in a new film English Vinglish.[10] directed by Gauri Shinde (R. Balki's wife). The film stars French actor Mehdi Nebbou and Adil Hussain along with Amitabh Bachchan in a special cameo. Sridevi is playing the central role of an Indian woman married into an American household who enrols in an English learning program to please her family. The film described as the journey of a woman to find her identity is slated to release in 2012 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Her return was officially announced in the IIFA Awards 2011 held in Toronto along with a montage of various Bollywood stars welcoming her back.
